Sustainable Tourism
What is Sustainability?
Sustainability and green issues are now very much mainstream, with governments, businesses and individuals all involved. Tourism, as one of the main economic drivers in the UK, has its part to play.
Current levels of consumption in the UK and other rich world countries are unsustainable. If everyone in the world consumed at the average rate as we do in the UK, we would need three planets. We need to move to 'one planet living' at home, at work, for business and travel. What are now seen as 'green' measures will become main stream in the future. For the moment they demonstrate forward thinking and excellent practice which gives your business a leading edge, making you stand out from your competitors and appeal to discerning customers.
The objective of sustainable tourism is to retain the economic and social advantages of tourism development while reducing or mitigating any undesirable impacts on the natural, historic, cultural and social environment. This is achieved by balancing the needs of visitors with those of the destinations.
Sustainability underpins all aspects of the visitor economy, it should not be seen as an add-on component, rather an integral element to all aspects of tourism development.
Why is Sustainability important?
There is increasing motivation, both morally and commercially, to become greener and source locally. The time to act is now for the benefit of your business. There is clear evidence to show that businesses which reduce their environmental impacts ‘are more sustainable, profitable, valuable and competitive’. (Environment Agency). There are many low cost actions you can take to start; you will save money and improve your sustainability, it really is good for business.
